When you’re not spending hundreds of thousands of dollars at the Yearling Sales like the “big boys”, one finds themselves realistically looking at horses that are more likely to race as a 3 Year Old. That was certainly the case when Dan purchased The Patchie Kid at the 2017 Magic Millions Sales in Adelaide.
He was an extremely nice type, who is also nicely bred so Dan’s immediate thoughts were 2000m as a 3 year old. And that was spot on, with him breaking his maiden at Seymour over 2000m yesterday!
Affectionately known as “Dusty” around the stables he is still a big kid, who lacks focus much of the time, but the ability is there and with maturity he’ll continue to improve.
Ben Melham delivered a perfect, strong ride to ensure he got the best out of his mount and reported what we all know, in that he’s still learning.
Dan’s pipe dream is to get him to the Derby in South Australia next year, so let’s see if can continue to improve and give his fantastic crew of owners a big thrill.
