Three chances to strike as racing returns to Ballarat

May 31, 2014

Saturday, May 31

The O'Sullivan stable will have three chances to strike when racing returns to Ballarat for the first time in more than six months on Sunday.

And it will be two first-starters that get the chance to win the opening race on the track since the $1.5million overhaul, which took place following Ballarat Cup Day in November last year.

The works saw turf and topsoil in the 1200m chute and inner track replaced, drainage upgraded and a dip in the home straight removed.

Rock of Glory and San Carlos are set to debut in the opening event of the day, the Evergreen Turf-Racing Returns to Ballarat Maiden Plate (1100m). Both are two-year-olds and expected to race well in their first-up assignments.

Steven Arnold will ride Rock of Glory, a Rock of Gibraltar colt, and Mark Zahra has been booked to partner San Carlos, a gelding by Argentinian sire Mr Nancho.

Trainer Dan O'Sullivan will also saddle up talented mare Glory's Girl in the Sportsbet Fixed Odds Handicap (1400m).

The five-year-old is already a winner at Terang this preparation and should run well after her last-start seventh at Sandown on May 11.

Darren Gauci will take the ride.

Racing begins at 12.13pm, with the last race to jump at 4.25pm.
