Kennedy and Square Conquer HQ

In May of 2022, Jaylah Kennedy strapped Berkeley Square for his debut maiden win at Geelong.
On Saturday, she steered him to a gritty victory at Flemington, her 26th career city success – and easily her most memorable to date.
Trained by Dan O’Sullivan, the big-striding son of Territories was trapped three-wide through the 1700-metre journey, but Kennedy elected to stay there, instead of snagging him back on a day where making ground was proving tricky.
Despite the tough run, Berkeley Square ($6.50) remained on the bit while turning, but still had a task to run down Keats ($6), who gave his usual strong kick and was still in front with 150m to go.
Commentator Matt Hill said the finale was “happening in slow motion” – but it was Kennedy and Berkeley Square who were moving the quickest.
Impressively, the tough win came under non-claiming conditions, adding merit to the effort and vindicating connections’ faith in Kennedy.
She’ll undoubtedly ride plenty of higher-grade winners in the future, but by her own admission, it will be hard for her to top Saturday’s triumph.
“I can’t put it into words – this is probably the most exciting win I’ve had in my career,” Kennedy said post-race.
“I’ve had a lot to do with this horse, since before I was race riding. I’ve ridden him since he was an early two-year-old.
“To be given the opportunity to ride him today, in a non-claiming race, I can’t thank connections enough, and obviously my master Dan for having faith in me.”
Berkeley Square almost stepped too well from the gates, and never looked a chance of getting cover without sacrificing significant momentum.
But though the spot was far from ideal, Kennedy said her mount was travelling too kindly to interrupt.
“We had an awful run, but in saying that, he was in the most beautiful rhythm, and he just loves this heavy ground,” she said.
“He’s a babe. As a young horse he was a worry because he’d fall over his own feet (but) he’s so relaxed.
“I was so glad to see him do that today, because I feel like he’s come back a stronger horse this time around, and I’m just glad that he’s got it done.
“I’m so proud of him.”
